Workplace Health & Safety Manager

Position Summary:

At Shenandoah Growers, Inc. (“SGI”) safety is our highest priority, and as a condition of employment, teammates are required to follow SGI’s safety standards and practices. The Workplace Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for establishing and executing the Company’s Safety and Worker’s Compensation programs and policies and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulatory requirements. The candidate is also responsible for SGI’s loss prevention initiatives to prevent and reduce teammate injuries and to minimize Workers Compensation expenses.  The candidate will partner closely with all site management to identify and promptly correct issues.  Together with Senior Management, the Workplace Health & Safety Manager will train, encourage and hold accountable site managers in establishing and nurturing a culture of safety, safety best practices, and safe-workplace behaviors that prevent injury ensuring safe working conditions for our teammates, contractors and guests.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develops and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and other applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Trains site management on how to perform mandatory safety inspections at their and complete required documentation, prepares written reports of findings, prioritizes corrective and preventative measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented effectively. able local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Works closely with site management and regional Operations executives to drive compliance and timeliness with corrective and preventative actions.
  • Responds to incidents (including close calls), supports managers in incident investigation procedures, and keeps executive management information appropriately. Pro-actively investigates all OSHA recordables and High Loss Potential incidents.
  • Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares report identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by Company management.
  • Partners closely with the Training Specialist to develop and implement training for all teammates in work site safety practices.
  • Re-evaluates safety programs, processes, and procedures at least annually and updates same to ensure the Company’s program remains up-to-date with regulatory changes and industry best practices.
  • Inspects the availability, readiness and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first aid supplies.
  • Displays passion for safety, works with a positive mindset, and demonstrates genuine caring for the safety and wellbeing of others through actions and attitude.
  • Uses empathy in approach to identify and correct safe behaviors, i.e. teach/coach rather than demand/threaten.
  • Identify and recommend safety equipment, material, and supplies for work operations.
  • Conducts safety inspections at all sites, directly observing practices in action and adherence to SOPs. Within 48 hours submits a Site Inspection Report to local, regional and corporate Operations management and the CHRO, providing corrective actions necessary to bring sites into compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Correlates safety inspections outcomes data with Worker’s Compensation claims data/loss runs quarterly to identify trends and determine required actions.

  • Develop, assist, or conduct appropriate Job Hazard Analysis and Activity Hazard Analysis.
  • Deploy oversight processes that ensure the integrity of safety inspecting, training and reporting procedures.
  • Maintains safety files and records.
  • Work in conjunction with Senior Management to effectively promote and recognize safety “ownership” by site management.

  • Reviews all incident reports, advises and/or coaches’ managers and teammates as may be needed. Tracks and verifies that corrective actions are completed in a timely manner.
  • Creates and distributes weekly emails providing safety tips companywide, encouraging a top-of-mind safety culture.
  • Works closely with the VP of Engineering, serving as advisor on capital projects/physical plant ergonomic safety, and to ensure timely resolution of related construction- and equipment-based safety issues.
  • Models SGI core values, commitment to food and physical safety, celebration of diversity, and a culture of inclusiveness.
  • Actively promotes teamwork, teammate satisfaction, open communication, cooperation, personal development, high standards of performance, and a sense of urgency.
  • Establishes the Company’s electronic repository of all safety program materials and documentation.
  • Partners with the Training Specialist on the development of all safety training curriculum for new hire orientation, annual and ad hoc training; regularly reviews training records to ensure every teammate receives the required training.
  • Serves as the primary contact with the Company’s Worker’s Compensation coverage broker and carrier, to mitigate and monitor risk outcomes and in the handling WC injury claims management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree
  • 3-5+ Years of related experience
  • Forklifts, Skid Steers, Pallet jacks
  • 3-5 Years of general supervisory experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • 1 or more certifications such as OSHA 10, OSHA 30, ASP, CSP Fluent
  • Bi-Lingual English/Spanish
  • Advanced MS Office Suite skills; demonstrated skills and experience interfacing with technology (tablet, etc.)
  • Intermediate math skills
  • Must be able to travel overnight 30-40%

Other:

  • Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and state and federal safety/health regulations
  • Initiative; self-motivated (driven), self-starter
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to maintain a sense of urgency, but remain calm when handling emergencies
